Declaration by Ambassador Gerhard Küntzle of Germany
On behalf of the Government of Germany and on my own behalf, I wish to warmly congratulate Ambassador Rafael Grossi on his election as the next Director General of the IAEA. Ambassador Grossi has been well known to the German Government for a long time, through fruitful cooperation in many fora. We wish him every success in fulfilling his new responsibilities at the helm of the IAEA and look forward to working with him.
The IAEA is a cornerstone of nuclear non-proliferation architecture and the peaceful use of nuclear technology. We are confident that the newly appointed Director-General will lead the IAEA in its complex tasks with technical expertise, diplomatic skill, impartiality, and determination. In the discharge of his responsibilities under the mandate of the IAEA and the guidance of the Board of Governors, he can count on the full support of the German Federal Government.
I would like to thank all four candidates for their dedicated participation in this electoral process, which presented us with a difficult choice due to their outstanding qualifications. In particular, our appreciation goes to the acting DG, Mr. Cornel Feruta, who deserves our recognition and gratitude for his able and reliable leadership of the Agency over the past months. Likewise, I wish to thank you, Madam Chair, and your team as well as the Secretariat, for your calm and expert stewardship which has brought us to our destination in time.
Once again, Ambassador Grossi, dear Rafael, all the best and good luck as you set out on your challenging journey at the helm of our Agency.
