STATEMENT BY GERMANY
DELIVERED BY AMBASSADOR GERHARD KÜNTZLE
INTERNATIONAL ATOMIC ENERGY AGENCY
BOARD OF GOVERNORS
AGENDA ITEM 3: Verification and monitoring in the Islamic Republic of Iran in light of United Nations Security Council resolution 2231 (2015)
18 November 2020 VIENNA
Germany aligns herself with the statements made by the European Union and the E3. In my national capacity, I would like to make the following remarks:
The overwhelming majority of statements under this Agenda Item clearly express member-states’ view that the JCPoA remains an important cornerstone of the global non-proliferation architecture.
I would like to reiterate Germany’s conviction that the IAEA and its safeguards team are doing an excellent job providing comprehensive scrutiny of Iran’s compliance with its nuclear-related commitments. In particular, we welcome that the Agency has continued its monitoring and verification mission in Iran – despite the considerable prevailing difficulties and challenges posed by the Covid-19-pandemic.
We have full trust in the Agency undertaking analysis and taking action in an impartial, independent and objective manner, within the existing safeguards framework and in line with established safeguards practice. Iran needs to strictly abide by all its commitments under the JCPoA.
We deem it essential that the Agency has the financial resources to be able to conduct its monitoring and verification tasks. Therefore the German Government intends to make a new voluntary contribution amounting to 500.000 EUR. This brings our contribution up to a total of around 5.6 million € for the implementation of the IAEA’s monitoring and verification in Iran since 2014 (including JPA and JCPoA).
Thank you, Madam Chair.
